Port and Container Driving Jobs: Felixstowe and the East

Container haulage is its own discipline. Around Felixstowe — Britain's largest container port — it is also the region's defining source of permanent driving and transport work.

Most UK logistics geography is about motorways. The East of England is about a quay. The Port of Felixstowe is the country's busiest container port, and the volume that lands there dictates the working rhythm of a substantial slice of Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire. Almost every box that comes off a vessel has to leave by road or rail, and the road half of that equation is where the driving jobs are.

This article is about how that market operates. If you are hiring or looking, our Felixstowe driver recruitment page and the East of England logistics recruitment hub cover live roles.

The geography of eastern freight

Rail matters here too. Felixstowe has rail freight terminals feeding intermodal services inland, which takes a share of the long-haul volume off the road and concentrates driving work at both ends of the journey.

What container driving actually involves

Port work has a distinct character that catches out drivers moving in from general haulage. The unit is a skeletal trailer carrying a container, and the job is a sequence of timed movements: book in, present paperwork, wait for a slot, lift on, run to the delivery point, tip or drop, return the empty. Turnaround discipline is everything, and a great deal of the skill lies in managing your own hours around a system where the waiting is not always under your control.

The main patterns you will encounter are day-tripping from the port to inland customers and back, tramping where boxes go further afield and the driver is out for several nights, shunting and terminal work moving units within the port estate or a nearby container yard, and trunk work feeding the inland rail terminals and distribution parks. Alongside the container sector sits a strong general haulage base and a substantial agricultural and food transport industry across Norfolk, Suffolk and the Fens.

Container haulage is measured in turnarounds, not miles. The drivers who do well are the ones who plan their day around the port's rhythm rather than fighting it.

Skills, tickets and what employers screen for

Beyond a C+E entitlement and a current Driver CPC, port employers look for specific things. Familiarity with container terminal procedures and vehicle booking systems is a genuine advantage. Understanding of weight distribution and axle loading matters more here than in almost any other sector, because a badly positioned box on a sliding skelly is an overload waiting to happen. ADR is valuable given the volume of hazardous cargo moving through the port. And an appreciation of customs and documentation — even at a basic level — makes a driver noticeably easier to work with.

The region also supports a large freight forwarding and customs sector on the office side. For anyone who wants to move off the road, Felixstowe and Ipswich are among the better places in the UK to do it, because operations, planning and customs roles are all concentrated in the same few miles.

On pay, container work typically sits alongside general haulage with premiums for nights out, ADR and specialist equipment. Our salary checker gives an indicative range by role and region — but in this sector the more important question is how the operator handles waiting time, because that is what determines whether a good rate translates into good earnings.

Hiring in a port town

Recruiting here has a particular dynamic. The pool of experienced container drivers is deep but finite, and largely known to itself — people have worked for several of the local hauliers over a career. Operators who treat drivers well earn a reputation quickly, and so do the ones who don't.

What that means in practice is that a vacancy here needs to be specific and credible: the type of work, the typical day, how nights out are paid, what the equipment is like, and what happens on a bad day at the terminal. Vague adverts get ignored. Our driving recruitment desk works these roles as permanent appointments only, and the surrounding operator and forwarding roles sit with our haulage recruitment specialists.
