No other part of the UK asks as much of a driver. The South East combines the country's densest urban delivery environment with two of its most important freight gateways — the deep-sea container terminals on the Thames, and the roll-on/roll-off Channel routes through Kent. A driver working here may be threading a rigid through Southwark on Monday and collecting a box at Stanford-le-Hope on Tuesday.
This article explains how the market is structured. For live roles and hiring support, see our London driver recruitment page, the Greater London logistics recruitment hub or the wider South East England hub.
It helps to stop thinking of "London" as one place. In freight terms it is at least four:
Urban driving in the capital carries obligations that simply do not exist elsewhere. The Direct Vision Standard governs which HGVs may operate in Greater London and what safety equipment they must carry. The London Lorry Control Scheme restricts heavy vehicle movements on many routes at night and at weekends. Low-emission requirements affect fleet composition. Many construction and retail clients additionally expect FORS accreditation or equivalent standards from their hauliers.
For drivers, none of this is a barrier — but it does mean that London experience is a genuine, transferable credential. Employers value someone who understands cycle-safety procedures, restricted-route planning and tight urban reversing, because those are the skills that keep incident rates down. If you have that experience, put it explicitly on your CV rather than assuming it is implied.
In the South East, the scarce commodity is not a licence — it is a driver who is genuinely comfortable in central London traffic and understands the compliance regime that comes with it.
Permanent driving salaries in London and the South East sit at the top of the national range, which is what you would expect. The complication is that the cost base sits higher too, and many of the largest employers are on the outer edge of the region — Thurrock, Dartford, Slough, Ashford — where the practical question becomes how you get to work at four in the morning.
That is why we would encourage anyone weighing an offer to compare the full picture rather than the headline. Our salary checker lets you look at a role against a region; the shift pattern, the depot location and the parking situation will then tell you what the job is really worth to you.
On qualifications, the baseline is a valid licence category and a current Driver CPC. Beyond that, the South East rewards specific credentials: container and port experience for the Thames Gateway operators, ADR for the fuel and chemical distribution around the estuary, customs-aware experience for the Channel operators, and demonstrable urban delivery history for anything inside the M25.
The direction of travel is towards more port-centric and more consolidated urban distribution. Warehousing continues to cluster around the deep-sea terminals rather than being pulled inland, which supports container driving and shunting roles. Inside the capital, retailers and construction firms are consolidating loads to reduce vehicle movements — fewer, better-planned journeys, run by drivers who can be trusted in a complex environment.
For employers, the recruitment reality is that the South East is the hardest market in the country to fill on price alone. The operators who hire well here are specific about the depot, the start time, the vehicle and the route profile, and they are realistic about what the commute involves. Our driving recruitment desk works permanent vacancies only, and the operator-side roles that sit around a fleet are covered by our haulage recruitment team.
