HGV Jobs in Leeds and West Yorkshire

Leeds sits where the M1 meets the M62 — the point at which north–south and trans-Pennine freight cross. That intersection defines the region's driving jobs market.

West Yorkshire has a freight geography that is easy to read once you know where to look. The M1 comes up from Sheffield and terminates in Leeds; the M62 runs across the Pennines linking Liverpool and Manchester in the west with Hull and the Humber ports in the east; the A1(M) passes just to the east as the alternative north–south spine; and the M621 threads the whole thing into the city itself. Where those routes intersect — around Wakefield, Normanton, Castleford and Birstall — is where most of the region's warehousing has been built.

What follows is a picture of how the market behaves. If you are ready to search or hire, our Leeds driver recruitment page and the Yorkshire logistics recruitment hub are the places to start.

The corridors that matter

One practical point about this region: the Pennines are real. A run west on the M62 in winter is a different job from a run south on the M1, and operators who are honest about that in the job brief tend to keep drivers longer.

Who is hiring, and for what

Yorkshire's permanent driving demand comes from a recognisable set of employers. Grocery and retail distribution centres dominate the trunking and store-delivery market. Third-party logistics operators run contract fleets across the M62 estates. General haulage and pallet networks take on curtainsider, tramping and network trunk work. Food and drink producers — a genuinely strong sector across Yorkshire — run temperature-controlled fleets with their own discipline and their own premium. And a substantial construction, aggregates and waste sector keeps tipper, mixer and hookloader drivers employed right across the county.

Alongside the driving roles, the region has a deep bench of transport office work: planners, shift managers, compliance staff and CPC-qualified transport managers. For drivers thinking about the next step, West Yorkshire is one of the better places in the country to make that move, simply because there are so many operators within commuting distance.

Regional pay conversations in Yorkshire almost always come down to the same thing — not the hourly rate in isolation, but how many hours are guaranteed and how the rota is built.

Pay and qualifications in context

Permanent HGV pay across West Yorkshire is competitive without carrying a South East premium, and the cost-of-living differential means take-home often compares favourably. The meaningful variables are the same everywhere: licence category, shift pattern, and whether the work requires additional tickets. Temperature-controlled and ADR work generally sits above general haulage; night trunking above days.

Because those bands move, we keep a live salary checker rather than publishing static figures here. It lets you combine a specific role with a region, which is the only way a benchmark is actually useful.

In terms of what employers screen for: a current Driver CPC and clean licence are the floor. ADR is valuable given the chemical and fuel operators across the region. Experience of temperature-controlled work is a genuine differentiator in a county with this much food production. And for the construction side, hiab, moffett and tipper experience will open doors that a general Class 1 CV will not.

What is changing

The most durable trend in this region is intermodal. Rail-connected sites such as Wakefield Europort, and the wider push to move long-haul boxes by rail with road handling at each end, changes the shape of driving work rather than reducing it — more terminal-based shunting and regional delivery, less full-length trunk. Drivers who are comfortable with container handling and terminal procedure are increasingly well placed.

The second shift is that employers here have become noticeably more willing to invest in people. Structured driver induction, funded CPC modules and clear routes into supervision are now common in the better operators. If you are evaluating an offer, those things are worth asking about explicitly; if you are writing one, they are worth stating, because they are what candidates in this market compare.
