HGV Class 2 recruitment for Portsmouth

Early starts, tail-lifts and awkward sites — matched to drivers who like that work.

Across the South East, rigid rounds start from sites such as the M3, M4 and M20 corridors and the airfreight hubs at Gatwick and Heathrow. We ask where the vehicle is based and what the drops look like before anything else.

For Portsmouth operators we cover single days, full weeks and ongoing rigid assignments. Planned cover can be booked in advance.

Class 2 cover across the South East is mostly about supporting Channel-port and customs operators, chilled grocery distribution, aerospace supply chains and regional carriers through holidays and busy weeks.

Portsmouth operates a class B Clean Air Zone, which charges HGVs that fall short of the emission standard — rigids included. We check the vehicle before city-centre rounds are booked.

How it works

How we match the driver

We match the driver

We look for Category C drivers who have worked similar rounds and want that pattern.

You confirm who is coming

We tell you the driver's name, start time and site so the depot can plan.

Planned cover booked early

Holidays and seasonal rounds can be booked weeks ahead.

Rigid planning

Planning rigid cover

A driver who already knows tail-lift work or site deliveries needs less supervision on the first day and gets the round done safely.

Drinks, food service and chilled rounds combine early starts with heavy handling and customer contact. The brief says what the driver will lift and where.

For a Class 2 request, include:

  • Whether it has a tail-lift or a HIAB
  • The start time and the finish you expect
  • Whether the driver collects signatures, returns or paperwork
  • Any ADR or HIAB tickets required
Compliance

Paperwork that decides it

No Class 2 driver is confirmed until the licence shows category C, the Driver CPC card is in date and the tacho card and right-to-work checks are complete.

We ask Category C drivers which rounds and bodies they have worked, then match on that rather than on the licence category by itself.

Class 2 FAQs

Common questions

What licence does a Class 2 driver need?

Category C, which covers vehicles over 3,500kg with a trailer up to 750kg, plus a current Driver CPC and a digital tachograph card.

How much notice do you need?

Planned cover is easiest with a few days' notice. Short-notice requests get a straight answer on what we can confirm.

Can you supply more than one Class 2 driver?

Yes. Tell us how many drivers you need and whether they start on the same day.

Do you also recruit permanent Class 2 drivers?

Yes. Our permanent driver desk places Class 2 drivers onto your payroll when you want a permanent hire.

Can drivers handle customer paperwork?

Yes. Tell us what the driver collects at each drop (signatures, returns or delivery notes) and we brief them on it.
