HGV Driver Recruitment Across the UK

There is no single national driving market. There are a dozen regional ones, each shaped by its own ports, corridors and employers — and hiring well means understanding which one you are actually in.

It is tempting to talk about "the UK driver market" as though it behaves as one thing. It does not. A container driver at Felixstowe, a night trunker at Magna Park, a multi-drop driver inside the M25 and a tramper running the A9 are doing four different jobs, for four different kinds of employer, in four labour markets with very different depth. Anyone recruiting nationally who treats them the same will struggle.

This piece sets out how the regions differ and links through to the market guides and landing pages for each. If you want to jump straight to coverage by area, our locations index lists every city and region we recruit across.

The corridors that carry the country

Four road corridors do most of the heavy lifting in British freight. The M1/M6 spine runs from London through the East Midlands to the North West and Scotland. The M62 carries trans-Pennine traffic between the Mersey and the Humber. The A14 connects the container port at Felixstowe to the Midlands. And the M25 distributes everything arriving in the South East. Nearly every large distribution site in Britain sits within a few minutes of one of those.

Layered on top are the gateways: deep-sea container terminals at Felixstowe, Southampton, London Gateway and Liverpool; roll-on/roll-off routes through Dover, Folkestone, Holyhead and Cairnryan; bulk and energy at Immingham, Grangemouth and Milford Haven; and airfreight at Heathrow, East Midlands and Manchester. Where a gateway sits, a specialist driving market forms around it.

Region by region

Each of the eleven regions we cover has its own logic. Our regional hubs set out live coverage in each:

The single most common recruitment mistake we see is a national employer running one advert, at one rate, for depots in three regions with completely different labour markets.

Local market guides

We have written a market guide for each of the areas where the driving job market has its own distinct character:

What employers are really competing on

Across every region, the same pattern holds: pay gets a candidate to the interview, and everything else decides whether they stay. The factors that consistently determine whether a permanent driving role fills and holds are the shift pattern and how stable the rota is, guaranteed hours and how overtime is structured, the age and condition of the fleet, the quality of the facilities at the operating centre, how the traffic office handles pressure, and whether there is a visible route into supervision, planning or transport management.

None of that is expensive to state in a job brief, and stating it is one of the highest-return things an employer can do. For an indicative view of what roles are paying by region, our salary checker is a useful starting point — but it should be the beginning of the conversation, not the whole of it.

How we work

Freight Talent recruits permanent staff only across transport, logistics and supply chain. We do not supply temporary workers, agency drivers or contract labour. Our specialist driving recruitment desk handles driver appointments, our haulage recruitment team covers operator-side roles including transport managers and planners, and our wider driver recruitment service spans every region above. Live roles are on the jobs board.

Next steps

Employers: whether you are hiring one driver or building a fleet across several depots, submit your vacancy and we will come back with a region-specific market view and a shortlist of permanent candidates. Candidates: upload your CV and tell us where you can realistically work — we recruit across every region covered above.
